Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Add asparagus pieces and cook for 2 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and cool in ice water for 1 minute. Drain and set aside.
Bring the same pot of water back to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 9-10 minutes, or until al dente.
Drain the pasta, reserving ½ cup of pasta water.
In a large bowl or skillet combine cooked pasta, asparagus, pesto, pasta water, lemon juice, lemon zest, and butter. Gently fold in flaked salmon.
